What result can I expect?

If you’re new to chiropractic care, you’ll want to know what type of results you can expect.

Statistically, research shows that chiropractic care is more effective and economical and gives longer lasting results for disorders of the spine than most other forms of health care.1-3

Individual experience varies from person to person, but most people can expect some benefits soon after beginning care, and for these to consolidate further as treatment continues.

Common ailments chiropractic treatment can help address include:

  • back and neck pain
  • dizziness
  • vertigo
  • headache
  • poor posture
  • pins and needles
  • numbness
  • rehabilitation of sports injuries.

Do adjustments hurt?

In most cases, not at all. In fact most people find having an adjustment very relaxing.

With some adjustments you might sometimes feel or hear a popping sound from the spinal joints. This is simply caused by a gas release from the joint as spinal movement is restored.

Techniques include using a handheld instrument to adjust the spine, or pelvic blocks to re-align the body. Special techniques are used for adjusting infants and children.

Whatever the technique, your chiropractor will use skill, not force or strength, to conduct a safe, effective adjustment.

What is the “cracking” noise we hear during an adjustment?

Contrary to popular belief, the “cracking” is caused by the release of air bubble around the joints. The synovial fluid usually creates bubbles as your joints move and functions while the carbon dioxide and nitrogen in the fluid rise up. When these air bubbles are released, this is where the cracking sound begins. The fluid then returns to normal after this.

Is chiropractic safe?

You may experience tenderness for a day or two after your initial chiropractic adjustment. This is a normal body reaction, similar to how you would feel after a deep tissue massage. Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, medication-free procedure and has minimal risks.

In Australia, your chiropractor studies for five years in order to received their doctorate in chiropractic, so you can be sure that you are receiving health care from a highly trained professional.

Do you treat all patients the same way?

At Shannon Avenue Chiropractic Dr Matthew Gooch will tailor all your treatments specifically to your needs. You will receive personalised care that is specific to you age, condition and specific spinal problem.

A good example of this is how a paediatric chiropractor cares for children. At a young age your joints are more mobile and a gentler approach is required so you receive optimal results.

Is chiropractic safe for the elderly?

As chiropractic care is a non-invasive treatment that can reduce the need for pharmaceutical intervention, it is perfect health care for elderly patients.

At Shannon Avenue Chiropractic, we also use a range of low force modalities including soft tissue work, activator and the use of a hand held massaging device. All treatments are also tailored to suit the needs of our patients and ensure they receive the best care and can feel comfortable and at ease during all treatment sessions.

Should I visit my chiropractor regularly even if I am not in pain?

At Shannon Avenue Chiropractic our aim is for all of our patients to live a pain free life as much as possible. Regular visits enable your body to stay in optimal health to ensure your “niggles” do not turn into conditions that are more serious.
